Delaware Day Care Closing after Failing to Report Abuse; Parents say Day Care Poorly Maintained

An in-depth report on the alleged mistreatment of children at a daycare center in the Wilmington area prompted an investigation that led to license suspension.

The center will be closing indefinitely starting Wednesday, according to a letter sent to parents by the board of directors.

The Office of Child Care Licensing in Delaware has substantiated 14 claims against the center during its investigations. The state substantiated a series of complaints before June’s end and published them to its online database after weeks of questioning.

As of July 2, more claims were included in the state’s database, along with a number of citations for noncompliance. There may be additional developments in the future. According to records from March 2024, investigators have confirmed that there were 98 instances in one month where the teacher-to-child ratios in all Holly Oak classrooms were not maintained correctly.

Additional records have seemingly been requested, as indicated by the online database. Additional grievances encompassed the failure to report a change in the administrator to the state, inadequate oversight, noncompliance with state meal regulations, failure to adhere to proper diapering protocols, subpar facility sanitation, and various other issues as per Delaware Online.

The employee at the center of the controversy had been placed on administrative leave since May 17, following allegations of inappropriate handling of children. Bethany Hunt, the former interim director, has been on leave since approximately May 21 for failing to report concerns.

However, the center assured parents that she was still working in the office. Almost all of the former board members stepped down once the initial reports reached the state.

Now, the center will be completely shut down.
