Girl who escaped child marriage tops Inter exam, wants to become IPS officer

S Nirmala, a student from Andhra Pradesh, has done such a feat that whenever there is talk of curbing child marriage and promoting girl education in the country, her brilliant example will be given. Nirmala’s story is a strong attack on the thinking of those conservative people who consider their girls as a burden and do not want to keep them at home for a long time and give up their daughters at an early age. Nirmala, who narrowly escaped the clutches of child marriage, has topped the Andhra Pradesh Board Inter First Year Examination. On the strength of his desire, passion and determination to achieve education, he secured 421 marks out of 440 (95.7 percent).

Nirmala, a resident of Pedda Harivanam in Kurnool district, had secured 537 marks (89.5 percent) out of 600 in class 10th. But last year her parents were trying to force her to get married. According to the report of Times of India newspaper, before this he had also got his three daughters married at a young age. But when an attempt was made to do the same with Nirmala, the youngest of the four sisters, she opposed it. The parents tried hard to convince him. Told that they could not afford his education. To placate him, it was also argued that there is no junior college nearby for further studies, so it would be very difficult for him to travel long distance and attend classes.

But Nirmala remained firm on her decision to continue further studies. He contacted his area MLA Y Saiprasad Reddy during an outreach program and explained his problem. Adoni MLA informed this to Collector Shri Shrujana who immediately stopped Nirmala’s child marriage. After this, the district administration got Nirmala admitted in Kasturba Gandhi Girls School, Aspri.

Nirmala took advantage of the opportunity and studied with full dedication and topped the intermediate examination. Nirmala said that she wants to work for child welfare by becoming an IPS officer.
