Los Angeles, California: Officers said that a security guard shot an 88-year-old lady at her Encino home on Monday after thinking she was a burglar.

Around 8 p.m. on New Year’s Eve, the private security guard was responding to a burglar alarm at the elderly woman’s residence in the 5200 block of Encino Avenue.

He allegedly shot the woman at that point because he believed her to be a burglar. After being shot in the stomach, the woman was brought to the hospital for medical attention. It took some time for her condition to become public.

Authorities say the guard was taken into custody for careless gunshot discharge. No more information is available at the moment.
