Poor buildings collapsed in Türkiye’s earthquake

The month of February 2023 wreaked havoc in Türkiye. A sudden earthquake of 7.8 magnitude caused such devastation that thousands of dead bodies were scattered in one stroke. This was the most devastating earthquake to hit Türkiye in the last 20 years. The sad thing is that Turkey had not even recovered from the devastation that occurred on February 06, when just 10 hours later, at a distance of about 95 kilometers to the south-west, another flood wreaked havoc. In one fell swoop, hundreds of poorly constructed buildings were razed to the ground. The area where most of the destruction occurred was around Gaziantep in south-central Turkey. The area was also home to thousands of Syrian refugees and many humanitarian aid organizations. The earthquake caused 50,783 deaths, 297 people went missing and 1,07,204 were injured in 11 affected provinces. More than 1.5 crore people were affected in this incident. More than 27 lakh people became homeless. A shameful aspect of this disaster was that the buildings in which the majority of deaths occurred were poorly constructed. 113 people were also arrested there in this regard.
