The Punjab and Haryana High Court has ordered the National Medical Council (NMC) and the Punjab government to shift all 258 MBBS students of Pathankot-based Chintpurni Medical College to other colleges. At least 149 students, including 15 students from Ludhiana, had filed a petition in the High Court in this regard. The court has also disposed of all the 11 petitions, including the one filed by the college management.
The first petition was filed by 51 students in July 2023 and later another petition was filed by a group of 65 students. The petitioners had requested the High Court to transfer the students of MBBS academic session 2021-22 and 2022-23 to any other recognized, affiliated medical college in Punjab or any other medical college affiliated to Baba Farid University of Health Sciences (BFUHS). Order to transfer.
Let us tell you that Chintpurni Medical College has been in controversies for a long time. This medical college, which was started in the year 2011, was closed after five years in 2016 due to lack of necessary infrastructure. But in the year 2021 the college again managed to get permission to take admissions for MBBS batch. This permission continued in the year 2022 also. After this, permission for MBBS admission was again withdrawn due to lack of infrastructure and facilities.
The petitioner said that the medical college has failed to provide necessary facilities and faculty for MBBS. He also informed that NMC has also refused to renew the recognition given to the college. NMC had withdrawn the recognition of the college after inspection. The High Court has ordered all stakeholders to complete the process of shifting the students within 16 weeks.
