The National Medical Commission (NMC) is serious about the increasing complaints of exploitation of medical students pursuing post graduation in private medical colleges. It is alleged that medical colleges make PG students work for 18-20 hours without weekly leave. Apart from this, they are also not given the full amount of monthly stipend. Due to this, students are committing suicide due to stress.

Recently, the Commission has also initiated investigation against the Medical College in the case of suicide of a PG student under similar circumstances. If sources are to be believed, the Commission is receiving complaints on a large scale from states like UP, Punjab, Haryana, Karnataka etc. where private medical colleges are harassing PG students.

Guidelines are being violated: According to NMC guidelines, PG students cannot be made to work for more than eight hours a day under any circumstances, but colleges make them work for 18-20 hours a day without showing it in the records. They are not even given any leave. In the name of monthly stipend, they are being given hardly Rs 20-24 thousand whereas this amount is around Rs 1 lakh per month.

Getting signatures on false documents:
It is alleged that colleges get students to sign false documents. If any student complains about this, the college administration threatens to fail them. According to the complaints received by NMC, many complaints are being received from parents. Their investigation is ongoing. NMC team may also make sudden visits to some colleges to investigate such cases.
