New Gun Legislation in Ohio Introduced by Democrats

Ohio Democrats are advocating for gun reform, which includes recognizing gun violence as a public health concern.

Five measures addressing universal background checks and concealed carry regulations were introduced following a mass shooting at the Kansas City Chiefs’ Super Bowl victory parade.

House Minority Leader Allison Russo, D-Upper Arlington, stated that gun violence is a frequent occurrence in towns, states, and the country during a Gun Violence Prevention Summit organized by Democrats. Gun violence is a prevalent issue in our community, affecting various locations such as neighborhoods, schools, university campuses, nightclubs, concerts, churches, grocery stores, shopping centers, and even celebratory events like parades for Super Bowl champions.

The conference advocated for five anticipated items of legislation, which are:

• Legislation titled the Keeping Our Survivors Safe Act.
• Designating Gun Violence as a Public Health Emergency.
• Practical Concealed Carry.
• Legislation for Universal Background Checks.
• Ohio Gun Violence Task Force.

Commonsense Concealed Carry aims to revoke the state’s law allowing concealed carry without a permit and mandates individuals to undergo fundamental training and adhere to restrictions in order to obtain a permit. It would also necessitate individuals to inform law authorities if they possess a concealed firearm during a traffic encounter.

The Universal Background Checks Act mandates that a background check must be conducted at the moment of purchase. Private sellers must conduct a transfer at a federally registered firearm dealer or a local law enforcement office that has already completed a background check.

Joe D. “Buck” Roth stated on the Buckeye Firearms Association website that limiting the rights of law-abiding gun owners to protect themselves, their families, and their homes will not prevent individuals who misuse those rights from engaging in illegal and reckless behavior. “Elected officials at the federal, state, and local levels should follow the Constitution and focus on addressing real issues instead of engaging in ineffective virtue signaling that primarily serves to raise funds for their campaigns during elections.”

Multiple media sites in Kansas City reported one death and that 11 out of 22 injured individuals were youngsters, as previously stated by The Center Square. Over one million individuals are said to have participated in the event, with security comprising over 1,000 police officers and FBI agents.
