Preamble of Indian Constitution: Every year 26th November is celebrated as Constitution Day in the country. On this day, programs are organized at many places in honor of the Constitution and its values and ideals. The Preamble of the Constitution is read at these events and government offices. The Preamble of the Constitution is its soul. Preamble means that the basic ideals of the Indian Constitution were incorporated in the Constitution through the Preamble. The great and ideal thinking of the Constituent Assembly is visible in the Preamble. This reflects the aspirations of the makers of the Constitution. The words included in the Preamble like – sovereignty, socialist, secular, democratic and republic tell about the nature of India and the words justice, freedom and equality tell about the rights enjoyed by the citizens of India.
The Preamble of the Constitution is as follows –
“We, the People of India, having resolved to constitute India into a sovereign, socialist, secular, democratic Republic and to all its citizens:
Determined to achieve social, economic and political justice, freedom of thought, expression, belief, religion and worship, equality of status and opportunity and to promote in all fraternities that ensure the dignity of the individual and the unity and integrity of the nation; In this Constituent Assembly of this day, this 26th day of November, 1949, “On this day of Miti Marg Shirsha Shukla Saptami, Samvat two thousand six Vikrami, we do hereby adopt, enact and dedicate this Constitution.”

Let us tell you that during the Emergency during the rule of Indira Gandhi, the words ‘socialism’, ‘secular’ and ‘national integrity’ were added to the Preamble through the 42nd Constitutional Amendment Act 1976. These words were not there before.

sovereignty- India is a sovereign country. It is free to take decisions on both its external and internal matters.
socialist- The word ‘socialist’ was added to the Preamble by the 42nd Amendment Act of 1976 to the Constitution. India has adopted ‘democratic socialism’. Both private and public sectors have control over the means of production and distribution. Its objective is to end deprivation, neglect and inequality of opportunities.

Secular- In India all religions are equal and all receive equal support from the government. The state will not discriminate against any person on the basis of religion, sect and method of worship.
Republic- In a republic, the head of state is elected directly or indirectly by the people. Not through inheritance. In a republic, political sovereignty rests in the hands of the people rather than in the hands of a single person such as a king.
