Respected Principal Sir, teachers, and my dear friends–

Today is the birth anniversary of the Iron Man, architect of national integration, Bharat Ratna Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel. Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel was born on 31 October 1875 in Nadiad, Gujarat. Friends, when India became independent, our country was divided into more than 550 small and big princely states. It was very important to integrate them into India, which was a challenging task. Many princely states wanted to keep themselves separate and independent rather than joining India. Sardar Patel was the first Deputy Prime Minister and first Home Minister of India. He played a very important role in the integration of the country. This is the reason why he is considered the pioneer of national unity.

Sardar Patel was also known for his excellent leadership and administrative abilities. Sardar Patel, who united the entire nation, is also called the Bismarck of India. After achieving independence, his contribution in building a united India by unifying the princely states cannot be forgotten. He had made it clear to the kings of all the princely states that their dream of a separate state was impossible and it was better for them to become a part of the Indian Republic. He organized the small princely states with his intelligence and political foresight. Due to his most important role in the geographical integration of India, his birth anniversary is celebrated as National Unity Day in the country. National Unity Day was celebrated for the first time in 2014.

Sardar Patel was born in a farmer family. He was the fourth child of his father Jhaverbhai Patel and mother Ladbai. He went to London to study as a barrister and after coming back started practicing law in Ahmedabad. Inspired by the ideas of Mahatma Gandhi, he participated in India’s independence movement. Sardar Patel’s first and major contribution to the freedom movement was in the Kheda struggle in 1918. He also successfully led the farmers’ movement in the Bardoli Satyagraha held in 1928. After the success of the Bardoli Satyagraha movement, the women there gave the title of Sardar to Vallabhbhai Patel. Sardar Patel was a clear and fearless speaker. If he ever disagreed with Gandhiji and Jawaharlal Nehru, he would say so clearly. He was imprisoned for three years during the Quit India Movement in 1942.

Mahatma Gandhi had given the title of Iron Man to Sardar Patel. It was the vision of Sardar Patel that the Indian Administrative Services would play an important role in keeping the country united. He laid great emphasis on strengthening the Indian Administrative Services. He called civil services a steel frame.

The foundation of any country lies in its unity and integrity and Sardar Patel was the architect of the unity of the country. Sardar Patel ji died on December 15, 1950 in Mumbai. In 1991, Sardar Patel was posthumously awarded ‘Bharat Ratna’.
