Swami Vivekananda Jayanti Speech: National Youth Day is celebrated every year on 12 January, the birth anniversary of Swami Vivekananda, in honor of his thoughts and ideals. The Government of India celebrates the birth anniversary of Swami Vivekananda, a spiritual guru and the person who brought Yoga, Vedanta and Indian philosophy to the Western countries, on a large scale every year. This year the National Youth Festival of the Central Government is being celebrated in Nashik, Maharashtra. Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate it. He will also address the youth of the nation. With the cooperation of many government departments, all the regional organizations of the Youth Affairs Department in the districts will celebrate National Youth Day. Road safety awareness programs will be organized in major cities and seven hundred and fifty district headquarters of the country. The theme of the National Youth Festival this year is – “My India by 2047, a developed India by the youth, for the youth”.
Many programs will be organized on National Youth Day in schools and other educational institutions across the country. Today we are here to celebrate the birth anniversary of Swami Vivekananda, a great thinker, philosopher, young monk, inspiration for youth and an ideal personality. I bow and pay homage to the great spiritual master of India. Friends! Today, along with the birth anniversary of Swami Vivekananda, National Youth Day is also being celebrated in the country. In fact, crores of youth are inspired by the thoughts and teachings of Swami Vivekananda. The words said by Swami Vivekananda help to fill the enthusiasm among the youth. Vivekananda’s vigorous speech and powerful thoughts awakened the sleeping people. His youth is a great example for every youth of the country. This is the reason why his birthday is celebrated as Youth Day in the country. The Government of India started celebrating his birth anniversary as National Youth Day about 38 years ago. In the year 1985, the Government of India had decided to celebrate Swamiji’s birthday as National Youth Day.
Born in a prosperous family, Swami Vivekananda was very intelligent and inquisitive since childhood. His teachers were also impressed by his presence of mind. But he was very yearning to attain God. He was very curious to know God. It is said that when his parents asked him to marry, he replied that he was searching for God, not a wife.

After meeting Ramakrishna Paramahansa, his inclination towards spirituality increased. He was a favorite disciple of Sri Ramakrishna Paramahamsa. After accepting Sri Ramakrishna as his spiritual guru, he came to be known as Swami Vivekananda. He was the epitome of energy. He initiated a spiritual revolution. After the Mahasamadhi of Sri Ramakrishna Paramahamsa, Swami Vivekananda traveled all over India.
It was Swami Vivekananda who propagated Vedanta and Indian philosophy at a time when India was an uncivilized country in the eyes of the western countries. He introduced the world to India’s spiritualism and raised the profile of India in foreign countries. He participated in the Parliament of Religions of America to tell the western countries about Vedanta and Indian philosophy. His speech at the Chicago Religious Assembly in 1893 shook the world. When Swami Vivekananda started his speech by addressing ‘Brothers and Sisters of America’, the House kept resonating with the sound of applause for two full minutes. From that day India and Indian culture got recognition all over the world. Only 30 years old Vivekananda taught the world the lesson of brotherhood from the perspective of Hindutva. The whole world was mesmerized by the speech given by this young monk in the Parliament of Religions.
There was no fear in Swami Vivekananda’s mind at all. He was completely free from bondage. He used to say that my children, we need muscles like iron and nerves like steel. In which a mind like a thunderbolt resides. Swamiji used to say that ‘Arise and awake and stop not till you achieve your goal.’
